Herniated Disc

Your spine is made of up 33 vertebrae, which are separated by 23 discs. These discs are critical in providing support and cushioning within your spine.

Each of your discs is made out of a tough outer layer of cartilage that houses a jellylike substance called the nucleus on the inside, which is what provides the cushioning between your discs. When a disc’s outer layer ruptures, some of the contents can leak out or bulge out, irritating or compressing nerves in the area.

Most herniated discs occur in active areas of your spine, namely your low back (lumbar spine) and neck (cervical spine).

What causes a herniated disc?

Herniated discs are almost always the result of age, wear-and-tear, or injury. As you grow older, your discs naturally lose moisture, becoming a little more brittle. This degenerative process leaves your discs prone to rupture. In addition, if you’ve put your spine through its paces during your life, you may have worn down your discs, leaving them weaker and susceptible to problems like herniation.

Other factors also put you more at risk of developing a herniated disc, such as carrying extra weight, accidents, or an occupation that includes frequently lifting heavy objects.

What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?

The most telltale sign of a herniated disc is pain, which may be constant or only with certain movements, depending upon its location and the nerve involvement. You may also feel symptoms that radiate down your arms if the affected disc is in your neck or down your legs if the problem is in your low back. These symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Weakness

If you’re struggling with any of the above, it’s a good idea to get in to see your primary care physician to evaluate you and if needed refer you to Dr.Chowdhury.
